Positive Handling in Schools Training

At some point, school staff may be involved in assisting, holding or positively handling a child.

React UK Training will give clarity, confidence and competence to staff working in an educational setting.

Have your staff had training on how to avoid the need to use reasonable force?

Do you and your staff fully understand their rights and responsibilities when holding a child/young person?

How can the need for using reasonable force be minimised?
When is it appropriate and acceptable to use force?

Are legally compliant holds being used in your school?

What are the essential policies and procedures needed in your school?

What procedures should be followed if there is an allegation made against you?

React UK can help you answer all these questions.

By attending the React UK Certificate in Positive Handling in Education training, your employees will be able to:

  • Further build on their confidence when dealing with behaviours that challenge, fear, trauma, aggression and violence;
  • Reflect on their understanding emotional regulation and management of children's emotions & behaviour;
  • Gain a clearer understanding of the impact of communication;
  • Gain a better understanding of what science is telling us about the biology underneath presenting behaviours ~ How the brain and body react when children are socially defensive, the implications for de-escalation and reducing the need for restraint;
  • Understand the aggression curve and the promotion of safety cues in the environment ~ 'PROTECT'
  • Have a basic understanding of current legislation relating to issues that can arise when dealing with aggression and violence in school settings;
  • Understand the DfE Guidance on 'The Use of Reasonable Force,' including the recommendations of techniques NOT to be used;
  • Recognise the risks associated with physical restraint and how to minimise those risks;
  • Risk assess their own safety when dealing with a potentially aggressive or violent child or young person;
  • Differentiate between holding, escorting and restraining;
  • Learn and practise memorable, low level least intrusive positive handling techniques;
  • Demonstrate and explain how to gradually de-escalate and relax the restraint, to allow the person being restrained to regain self-control;
  • Know and understand the requirements for recording any use of restrictive force and how the information can be used to inform Behaviour Plans/Risk Assessments;
  • Recognise the need to ‘Repair and Rebuild’ relationships following the use of any restrictive force.
